Presumably, the studio's plans for a prequel over a sequel had a lot to do with the fact that Will Smith's character, Robert Neville, died at the end of the original film, which would make it a tad difficult to pick up the story where it left off. When he goes to the video store, he finds his mannequins have been moved. But he is not alone. Robert and Sam exercise to keep up their strengths and Robert goes to a video-rental store where he talks to the mannequins, his only form of contact with the human form. After three years, Neville sees an apparently uninfected woman, Ruth, in broad daylight and captures her. The infected are portrayed as nocturnal, feral creatures of limited intelligence who hunt the uninfected with -like rage.
He fights them all and both are able to get out of the building. Anna explains a plan to leave New York, and go to a colony of immune survivors in Vermont. Lawrence and his team of digital-effects artists have distressed and depopulated New York is downright uncanny. The alpha vampire directs other vampires not to attack Robert, who now vaccinates the female to return her to vampire form. While blacked out, he has dreams about the past once more. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there.
This movie was supposed to be made by Ridley Scott over a decade ago. That's because after dark the streets are ruled by bands of predatory zombies -- hairless creatures who were once human but have changed into savage, speechless killers with fangs for teeth. A few good moments, a lot of bad ones. We're talking about a general audience's inability to deal with another scene like , Neville's dog. They, too, long to learn the secret that lurks in Neville's blood, though they will have to take caution while attempting to procure it because Neville will sooner die attempting to slay every last one of them than willingly giving up a single drop. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there.

Just a real shame they had to dumb them down more and more as the movie progressed.
Sam spots a deer again, so Robert and Sam go after it. He obtains books and other research materials from a library and through painstaking research discovers the root of the disease in a strain of capable of infecting deceased and living hosts. The dream scene is interrupted by Neville waking to once again face his lonely reality. Later that evening, Robert sees the Darkseekers have followed him, launch an attack on the house; the previous night they had followed Anna back to the house when she rescued Robert. They have developed medication which helps them to overcome the most severe symptoms of the infection.
